Adding a Bundt tin (pan) to your collection is a great way to pep up the appearance of your cakes and add some variety to your baking world. Our easy apple walnut Bundt cake recipe is just the ticket to get you started using this type of cake tin.
The Bundt tin is one of the most popular tins or moulds alongside the traditional round and square baking tin. The most commonly asked questions about this type of tin are:
What is the point of a Bundt cake tin?
The distinctive design, with its inner central metal core, helps the cake to bake more evenly. There is less risk of the outer cake edges being burned in an attempt to make sure the center of the cake is properly cooked. Aside from this, the fluted mould design produces an attractive cake with a hole at the center.
Why is it called a Bundt tin?
The name derives from the German word Bund, which means federation or alliance. The T in Bundt was added for copyright reasons and possibly to distance the name from the pro-Nazi organisation, the German-American Bund.
How do you use a Bundt cake tin?
You can use a Bundt tin like any other baking tin. Lightly grease non-stick varieties and do not fill more than 2/3 full with batter. After baking, clean off any loose crumbs with an absorbent paper towel and then wash them in mild soapy water. Always dry thoroughly before storage. Check manufacturers guidelines regarding whether the Bundt tin is dishwasher safe.
Who invented the Bundt cake tin?
Following a request from members of the Minneapolis Hadassah community who wanted to make heavier breads and cakes in the German tradition, American inventor and engineer H.David Dalquist designed the aluminium Bundt pan in 1950.
